David Sutherland, CPA/CFF, CFE, is President of DHF Financial Forensics PLLC, a boutique accounting firm in Lindon, Utah, specializing in forensic and investigative accounting. He has over 20 years of experience conducting civil and criminal financial forensic investigations. He formerly served as a Detective with the Professional Standards Bureau of the Phoenix Police Department. During public service, he conducted numerous civil and criminal fraud investigations and internal city and police-related proactive inspections and audits.
In 2009, Dave retired from the police department in good standing and began his work as a forensic accountant in the private sector. As a result of his non-traditional background, he has distinguished himself as an expert in financial forensics. He provides credible opinions which are clear and concise. He specializes in measuring lost profits, background investigations, asset searches, analysis of financial condition, personal injury and wrongful death lost earnings and earnings capacity, and embezzlement investigations (e.g., civil and criminal). He has assisted insurance companies, legal counsel, and business owners in resolving over a thousand insurance claims involving economic damages over a hundred million dollars. He has testified as an expert witness in Arizona, Nevada, and Utah federal and state courts.
Dave holds bachelor's degrees in economics and Japanese and a Certificate in International Business from Arizona State University. He also earned a master’s in accountancy from the University of Phoenix. Dave is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in Utah and Arizona, Certified in Financial Forensics (CFF), and a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE).
Dave has presented nationally on business interruption, extra expense, property loss, personal injury lost earnings and earnings capacity, and fraud loss-related economic damages to various audiences, including police departments, insurance companies, law firms, and professional organizations. He has authored articles on the topics of white-collar crimes and economic damages.
