More Perils? More Problems: How to Handle Claims with Multiple Wind Events (W21)

The presentation will feature an interactive discussion regarding the various issues that arise when multiple storms impact the same property. The discussion will explore the issue of multiple claim numbers and multiple damages to the same loss, and we’ll also will explore the issues that arise from claims that involve both wind and flood damages. We will identify the different types of weather records available, how to interpret them, and the role of a Forensic Meteorologist in determining the highest wind speeds, rainfall amounts, and storm surge flooding at a specific property resulting from different hurricanes and severe thunderstorms.  The panel will further discuss the recent changes in Florida Law and its impact on existing claims and future claims as well as the increased costs associated with rebuilding after the storm. The presentation will aid in understanding key issues that are likely to arise in the property insurance industry over the next few years. The perspective of attorneys, meteorologists, and engineers will give the audience a better understanding of the multiple forces at play in insurance claims.
